What is the difference between a Layer-1 and Layer-2 metaverse?

We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time — T.S. Eliot

Before we take a closer look at the differences between Layer-1 and Layer-2 metaverses, let’s make sure we are on the same page when it comes down to the definition of what the metaverse truly is.

We asked Aragorn, our CMO and a metaverse expert:

“The metaverse is a way for us, human beings, to reinvent how we interact with each other and how we interact with reality itself through what we call an extra layer, which is the metaverse.”

Okay, so let’s dive into a Layer-1 metaverse:

This type of metaverse is virtually only limited by the engine it is built on. It allows people to experience seamless metaverse exploration without having to worry about unnecessary virtual boundaries.

And what about a Layer-2 metaverse?

This type of metaverse might offer interconnected experience but it is limited within the conventions of the metaverse itself. In Layer-2 metaverse, people have to play by the existing rules when it comes down to graphics, character abilities, customization options, etc.

So what is YOM then?

As Aragorn puts it:

“YOM is the first Layer-1 metaverse. It is a world, a platform, that allows you to build anything based on your own preferences. You can build your own universe but you will still be able to connect it seamlessly to any other universe built on the platform.”

Unlike other platforms, YOM allows you to travel from one world to another and bring your unique virtual assets with you. It becomes possible since your super profile is saved on the Solana blockchain and can be accessed in all universes created on the platform.

Again, the only limitations that exist are engine limitations. Now, YOM runs on Unreal Engine 5, the world’s finest video game engine that enables game developers and creators to realise next-generation real-time 3D content and experiences with greater freedom and flexibility than ever before.

As more and more developers join the movement and create new gaming worlds, it is a matter of time before Unreal Engine becomes an open standard. For us, YOM explorers, it means that we will see less and less limitations when exploring and building the first Layer-1 metaverse.
